COVID twice: I wanted to share my story as I am recovering from my second infection with COVID 19. I had first the virus in France in October. I thought, naively being somehow immune, having built antibodies from this first ill-luck. But after 5 months, I got infected here in Tunisia again.  Both times, I experienced similar symptoms which are dry cough, fever, nausea, shortness of breath and tiredness. Thanks God my symptoms were relatively mild and I didn’t need advanced healthcare. Plus, I am lucky to have had the best carer, mummy bless her, by my side who has been going through the sleepless nights. She also got sick but, like the first time, she only experienced lights symptoms, despite her age and poor health. She attributed it to her healthy Mediterranean diet, her farmer past hard life conditions, and daily energy magic potion of lemon, olive oil and honey.  I am recovering well feeling each day better. While taking it slow now, I am reflecting on the level of care and attention, incomparable, I had in both countries. Though Tunisia is only few miles away from Europe, it seems so far in good access to what should be a basic human right, health. Tunisia used to proud itself for its strong public services but this last decade all has been falling apart. Inequality level is growing. Middle-class revenues have plummeted and the poor became poorer. Access to basic good public services such as water, health or education became a business. People make jock “You go to the hospital healthy and leave sick”. The private sector in health or education, for those who can afford and foot the bill, is taking over. A myriad of private clinics and schools are mushrooming in every corners. COVID has exposed and accelerated the ill-health of the society. Figures of COVID infection are way underestimated as most patients will not see a medic. For simple reasons, the public healthcare system is dysfunctional. It doesn’t have much to offer. Most don’t use it unless dying and have no other options. Patients stay at home, hoping it will go miraculously with rest, basic self-medication and faith. Consequently, many are not cared for and recorded anywhere in the system. I am lucky I could afford the luxury of a private doctor who I mobilised in the middle of the night to relieve me for my ordeal. The Dr came with no protective equipment. He told us he is seeing many patients with second COVID and himself had it also twice. At the payment, he told us “Pay me what you can afford and if you can’t, it is OK”!  Forget about OMS recommendations of “test, test, test and isolate”, most countries just don’t have the capacity to test. Tests at public hospitals are reserved only to the most vulnerable and sick. COVID test here is a luxury coming with a price tag of the equivalent of 70Euro. It takes days to book and get the result in a private laboratory. With Tunisia facing massive unemployment and a woefully increased number living under the poverty line, it is unlikely people will bother to be tested, let alone isolate. Digitalisation having lagged behind, there is not the culture or the infrastructure to work remotely. Working from home is only for the few who generally are connected with western organisation/companies. There is hardly any state benefit or safety net. Western furloughs scheme, being paid to stay at home, is not even a dream. Literally, if you don’t go out to earn your bread and butter, there is not food and support. So even when you have symptoms people will still carry on their daily business and mix. Only people who are traveling to countries that required COVID 19 test do the test. There are already rumours that test results are trafficked/bought in the black market at lower price to fulfil travel requirements. Meanwhile the virus keeps spreading… Until this health crisis is sorted, which will take time and resource, the most vulnerable are falling even more through the crack. Children are dropping out of school and increasingly in the streets doing little survival work to support their families. As the ship is sinking and there are little collective and ambitious actions to sail and thrive, people, left to themselves, are looking for individual solutions. For many, it is to run away to more generous shores. There have never been as many Tunisian, educated and less educated, smuggling their way out of the country. The promised land is naturally neighbouring Europe. Often Tunisian are well-aware of the hardship they can find in Europe. But still as a young neighbour put it “We know Europe is not perfect but at least, when you are poor, you can still have a decent life that fulfils your basic needs with a roof over your head, access to good health care and education”. COVID 19 precautionary measures that could mitigate the spread of infections are therefore very far from daily preoccupations. This virus reflects in a way our inter-connect world, for the worst and the better, terribly contagious. From Wuhan, France or my small town in Tunisia, viruses know no border. As shown again, our destinies are common. We can’t be safe until we are all safe. We have to tackle issues globally together.  The COVID pandemic has wreaked havoc and is probably the most disrupting element of our time. But it can be also a great opportunity to turn the tide and rethink our system to create a better more equal world for everyone.
